Environment Agency
The public body protecting and improving the air , water and land environment in England and Wales. Activities range from influencing Government policy and regulating major industries nationally, right through to day-to-day monitoring and clean up operations at a local level.
Forestry Commission
The public body responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands, increasing their value to society and the environment. Their responsibilities include research, commercial timber production, sustainability programmes and policy, as well as learning and leisure.
Lake District National Park Authority
This Government-funded authority is responsible for looking after the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Lake District. The LDNPA provide opportunities for people to understand and enjoy the special qualities of England's finest landscape. The LDNPA owns Bassenthwaite Lake and some sections of shoreline.
National Trust
An organisation with charitable Trust status, the National Trust looks after 63,000 hectares of sites of special scientific interest in England, accounting for 6% of the total. They also own and care for one quarter of the land in the Lake District. The conservation and management of the Lake District's woodlands, fells and footpaths forms a major part of the work in the North West Region.
Natural England
A government sponsored organisation, Natural England works for people, places and nature, to enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas. It promotes access, recreation and public well-being and contributes to the way natural resources are managed so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future.
United Utilities
The largest commercial operator of water and wastewater networks in the UK, United Utilities' principal activities are managing and operating the regulated electricity distribution, water and wastewater networks and treatment plants in north west England.
